How Well Do You Know Our Local Area?

How easy is it for you to walk, cycle or catch public transport to school?  Find out in Jindalee State School’s new active travel map.  Brisbane City Council has produced this map for the school as part of the Active School Travel program.  Our active travel map is a detailed map of our school’s local area highlighting public transport routes, walking and cycle paths and essential public facilities.  Every family should have received a hard copy of our active travel map over the last week.  Spare copies are available from the office.

Download the BCC-Jindalee State School travel map pamphlet here (PDF, 2.78KB)

You can also measure the distance from your house to school using the measuring scale in the legend.  Have a look for the big pink boundary. We call the area inside this boundary the ‘no excuses zone’. If you live within that area, you have less than 500m to travel to school and that is an easy ten minute walk!  If you drive from outside the area, you can still do the ‘Park and Stride’.  Just leave your car outside the area and walk the rest of the way.

You can also use the active travel map this weekend to discover nearby bikeways and walking paths, catch a bus, ferry or train, walk to parks and shops and visit other local attractions.

Upcoming Active School Travel Events

Wednesday 19th August

Preppie Walking Bus

Due to the success of our Walking Buses this year, we would like to hold a special walking bus just for our Prep children on Wednesday 19 August.  Ben Harm (our school Adopt-a-cop) and Active school travel members will walk the children from their classrooms to Arrabri Avenue (across from ‘Chase the Rider’ coffee shop) for parents to collect their children from here.

Students are required to be registered to join the afternoon walking bus to Arrabri Avenue. This is so that we can ensure that we have enough adults to supervise the children whilst they are walking. If you would like your child to join the walking bus in the afternoon with Active School Travel members, please register your child by emailing info@jindaleess.eq.edu.au by Monday 17  August.  We are also looking for parents to help to supervise the children during this walking bus.  If you are interested in helping with supervision, please let us know through info@jindaleess.eq.edu.au .

Students who participate in this walking bus will receive an extra stamp in their Active School Travel Passport.

Thursday 10 September

Scooter Course

As part of our participation in the City Council Active School Travel program we are lucky to be able to receive funding to allow our top active school travellers to be rewarded for their efforts to travel more actively by conducting a scooter course.  We will be looking for our top active travellers from our Thursday Walking bus.  We will also identify these children through classroom passports which will help us to identify our top active travellers who travel independently or with a family member on a Thursday.  Notes will go home to these identified students closer to the date.

Friday 11 September

Friday Walking Bus to Boat Ramp Park

After the success of our last Friday Walking Bus to the boat ramp park, we will once again conduct an afternoon Walking Bus. Active School Travel committee members (including our school adopt-a-cop Ben Harm) will once again conduct a walking bus in the afternoon that will leave from our school tuckshop area to the Boat Ramp Park playground. The walking bus will arrive at the boat ramp playground at approximately 3.20pm.

Students are required to be registered to join the afternoon walking bus to the Boat Ramp. This is so that we can ensure that we have enough adults to supervise the children while they are walking. If you would like your child to join the walking bus in the afternoon Active School Travel members, please register your child by emailing info@jindaleess.eq.edu.au by Wednesday 9 September.  We are also looking for parents to help to supervise the children during this walking bus.  If you are interested in helping with supervision, please let us know through info@jindaleess.eq.edu.au.

Students who participate in this walking bus will receive an extra stamp in their Active School Travel Passport.
