Active School Travel (AST)

Jindalee State School participated in Brisbane City Council’s Active School Travel Program over the last three years. At the end of last year JSS won the runner-up Award for AST- School of Excellence.

Families are encouraged to actively travel to and from school by:

• Walking – an option for families living close to school.

• ‘Park & Stride’ – an option for families living further away. Parents park away from the school and walk or ride with their children the rest of the way.

• Cycling or scootering – there is a bike enclosure for children to secure their bikes. The office can provide the combination code for the lock.

• Car pooling with other families.

• Using public transport.

The aims of the program are to:

  • Reduce congestion and improve safety of travel routes around the school
  • Encourage environmentally-friendly alternatives to car travel
  • Increase opportunities for health, fitness and independence for children

‘Walking Wheeling Wednesday’ is the school’s weekly active travel day.

Over the last three years travel data was collected on this day and classes and individuals were rewarded with class trophy or prizes. Meanwhile BCC support has eased off but we still like to maintain a high standard of active school travel.

Achievements and Activities:

Before we started the program at the beginning of 2010 only 22% of students travelled actively to school. In the first year we increased this figure to 61% on average. For 2011 and 2012 active travel mode was 58% on average.

The JSS Active School Travel committee has achieved to embed cycle skills and road safety course into year 4 curriculum, the introduction of a school bus service from Sinnamon Park & Seventeen Mile Rocks (BBC Route 776), has organised activities like visits from Roadstar - the Active Travel Mascot, ‘Bling your bike day’, ‘Walking star day’, fruit morning tea, ‘Ride-to-School with our Adopt-a-Cop day’ and walking bus from the Jindalee Police Beat with our local police man.

This year we want to continue with activities and calling for new parents to come on board. We meet on the first Tuesday of the months at 2.15pm in Ms Whittering’s office.
