Jindalee State School was very proud of a small group of Year 4 students who gave up their morning on the Australia Day public holiday, to come back to school and perform as a special Australia Day Choir at the Rotary Citizenship Ceremony which was held in the school hall. The 14 students who performed, had all been members of the Year 3 choir in 2016. There was only 2 days to rehearse once school returned from holidays, but the students worked very hard under the direction of Mrs Caroline Duffus to memorise “I am Australian” and “Waltzing Matilda”. These songs were performed beautifully at the ceremony. The students also led the singing of the National Anthem. The Year 4 Choir was commended for their dedication by the attending local Members of Parliament, Tarnya Smith and Milton Dick, as well as local Councillor Matthew Bourke.
The students’ performance enhanced a wonderful multicultural Citizenship ceremony at which 87 new Australian citizens were welcomed as new Australian citizens. The ceremony served as a wonderful reminder of what a multicultural society Australia has become and how this must be embraced and celebrated. I’m sure that the students, like I did, felt honoured to be part of this Citizenship Ceremony.
